Debby Lipkin, headteacher at Nightingale Academy, in Turin Road, Edmonton, was delighted to see 67 per cent of its 141 pupils get A to C in English.

She said: “We have bucked the trend with English grades, they have gone up amazingly to 67 per cent. That has been our focus because 60 per cent of our pupils have English as an additional language.

We also have large number of disadvantage pupils. We have provided them with our magnificent learning resource centre because a lot of pupils don’t have a place at home to study so they can come here in the evenings and get support for their studies.

Pupil Thivya Saravanabaven, 16, of Nightingale Academy, gained five A*s and three As.

She said: “I was stunned by the amount of A*s I got. It will take time to sink in but I put the work in and it’s paid off.”
